Description
The ABB 5SHY35L4520 is a press-pack IGBT (PPI) module rated at 3300 V (3.3 kV) and 1200 A, belonging to ABB’s advanced StakPak™ family of high-power semiconductor devices. It is commonly used in medium-voltage variable frequency drives (MV VFDs) such as the ABB ACS1000 series, as well as in railway traction converters, wind turbine inverters, and industrial motor control systems requiring robust, maintenance-free power switching.
Unlike traditional wire-bonded IGBTs, the 5SHY35L4520 uses ABB’s proprietary press-pack technology, which eliminates bond wires and solder joints—resulting in superior thermal performance, higher surge current capability, and fail-safe short-circuit behavior (the device fails into a short rather than an open circuit, enhancing system safety).
This module is often deployed in multi-level inverter topologies (e.g., Neutral Point Clamped – NPC) where reliability under harsh electrical and thermal cycling is critical.

✅ Key Features & Advantages
- Press-Pack Technology: No bond wires → higher reliability, better thermal cycling endurance, and soft failure mode.
- High Surge Capability: Withstands short-circuit currents for several microseconds without destruction.
- Double-Sided Cooling: Enables efficient heat extraction from both top and bottom surfaces—ideal for compact, high-power stacks.
- Low Conduction Losses: Optimized for high-efficiency operation in medium-voltage drives.
- Proven in Harsh Environments: Widely used in mining, marine, rail, and oil & gas industries.
- Long Service Life: Designed for >100,000 hours of operation under proper thermal management.
🏭 Typical Applications
- ABB ACS1000 Medium-Voltage Drives(for pumps, fans, compressors in water, mining, and industry)
- Electric Locomotives & High-Speed Trains(traction inverters)
- Offshore & Marine Propulsion Systems
- Wind Power Converters(full-power back-to-back converters)
- Industrial Furnaces & Rolling Millsrequiring precise torque control at high power
🔧 Handling & Installation Notes
- Mounting Pressure: Must be installed with calibrated hydraulic press tool to apply10–12 kN force—uneven pressure causes hot spots and premature failure.
- Thermal Interface: Use high-quality thermal paste or phase-change material on both sides.
- Electrical Isolation: Since the case is electrically live, insulating sleeves and washers are mandatory unless used in a floating stack design.
- ESD Protection: Handle with grounded wrist straps—IGBT gates are sensitive to electrostatic discharge.
- Storage: Keep in dry, anti-static packaging; avoid temperature cycling before installation.
