Description

The Woodward 5466-316 is a 16-channel digital input (DI) module designed for the MicroNet™ Plus programmable automation controller (PAC) platform—Woodward’s high-integrity control system widely used in gas turbines, steam turbines, reciprocating engines, compressors, and power generation applications.

This robust I/O module is engineered to interface directly with industrial field devices such as limit switches, pressure switches, relay contacts, pushbuttons, and auxiliary contacts that operate within a 24–60 V DC voltage range. Unlike dry-contact modules, the 5466-316 is a “wet contact” sensing module, meaning it detects the presence of an external DC voltage applied across its input terminals—making it ideal for integration into standard control circuits found in oil & gas, utility, and marine environments.

Each of the 16 channels features optical isolation from the internal system bus and from adjacent channels, providing excellent immunity to electrical noise, ground loops, and transient surges—critical in facilities with large motors, VFDs, or ignition systems. The module includes individual yellow LED indicators for real-time status monitoring (ON = input active), enabling rapid diagnostics during commissioning or troubleshooting without requiring software access.

The 5466-316 mounts on a DIN rail within a MicroNet™ Plus local or remote I/O (RIO) rack and communicates with the main controller via a high-speed, deterministic fiber-optic or copper-based network (typically using Woodward’s proprietary I/O bus protocol). It supports hot swapping in redundant configurations, minimizing downtime during maintenance.

Configuration, calibration, and diagnostics are managed through Woodward’s ToolKit™ software, which provides full integration with logic programming, alarm management, and sequence-of-events (SOE) recording.

Main Features and Advantages

Wide Input Voltage Range:
Supports both 24 V DC (common in European systems) and 48/60 V DC (standard in North American power/turbine controls)—reducing need for signal converters.

High Noise Immunity:
Optical isolation and robust filtering ensure reliable operation near high-energy equipment like exciters, igniters, or switchgear.

Immediate Visual Feedback:
Per-channel LEDs allow technicians to verify field signal status instantly—critical during safety interlock testing or outage recovery.

Seamless MicroNet™ Integration:
Auto-detected in ToolKit™ software; inputs map directly to user-defined tags in ladder logic, function blocks, or state machines.

Proven in Critical Applications:
Deployed globally in black-start generators, pipeline compressors, and cogeneration plants where reliability is non-negotiable.

Application Field

In a natural gas compressor station, the 5466-316 monitors:

  • Emergency shutdown (ESD) valve position feedback
  • Lube oil pressure switch statuses
  • Vibration trip relay contacts
  • Motor starter auxiliary contacts

These signals feed into turbine start-permissive logic, trip protection, and SOE logging—ensuring compliance with API 612 and ISO 23251 standards.

In a marine propulsion system, it interfaces with engine overspeed switches and fire detection panel outputs, supporting fail-safe shutdown sequences required by classification societies (e.g., DNV, ABS).
